Old Grant County Court House

The “old” portion of the courthouse dates to 1878, with an addition completed in 1909. The different colors of the exterior brick show where the two sections meet. The original bricks were fired on the property at the Barger Brick Kiln.
A World War I monument was added to the front of the courthouse in 1928, with concrete work completed by John Edsmond Tay lor. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, thanks in part to the efforts of charter members of the Hardy County Historical Society. Over the years, the
building has housed the sheriff’s office, health clinic, local offices, and Shepherd College.
Veterans’ Room
The courthouse is also home to a Veterans’ Room, honoring local men and women who served our country. Photographs represent veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars. The room was dedicated during a special ceremony attended by many of those represented in the collection.
Preserving Our History
The Hardy County Historical Society has leased the courthouse from the county with plans to restore the building and create a museum featuring rotating exhibits about local families, businesses, and daily life.
Restoration is underway, including brick repointing, exterior painting, rebuilding the front columns, and replacing broken windows. The project is a long-term effort to preserve this important part of Hardy County’s history for future generations.
