The Star Mercantile
Open Saturday and Sunday
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Star Mercantile has been many things throughout the years. It began as a dry goods store in 1906 and
served as a barbershop, boardinghouse, bank, pool hall, beer joint, and hunting lodge over the decades. Harrison Riley Orndoff, the current owner’s great- grandfather, built the current building, and it has gone in and out of family hands. The Capon Valley Bank started operations in the pool room until 1949, when it
moved to nicer quarters down the street. Chris See opened the first White Star Restaurant a few doors down the street back in 1935. After a fire destroyed the old site, the restaurant was moved to this location in 1944. It was operated by John and Idell Snyder. Welton C. and Polly Orndoff ran the Star from 1954
to 1968. Other owners were Pete and Kathleen Good and Don and Jeanette Perry. Betsy Orndoff-Sayers bought the building back in 1990.
