Eunice Dasher McCoy Jewelry Auction
|
[hide]
|
Eunice Dasher McCoy was an inveterate collector of antiques and a very civic minded woman, supporting the arts and such worthy institutions as the Hardy County Public Library. Mrs. McCoy had two very prized possessions. One was her Theatre and another was her white gold and diamond ring. On this Heritage Weekend an occasion Mrs. McCoy supported by opening her home and garden for tours you can view both of them and more.
The Board of Directors of the McCoy-McMechen Museum has decided to make two pieces of her estate available for purchase by the public. Mrs. McCoy's art deco style diamond and platinum watch and her white gold and diamond ring will be on display in the museum and are being offered for sale by sealed bids.
A story passed on to the current Board from Ralph Hitt, one of the executors of her will, informs us that after Mrs. McCoy's passing, the executors were unable to locate Mrs. McCoy's diamond ring. By chance a wadded up piece of paper was found in the bottom of her waste basket, and inside was the ring! Sealed bids will be accepted by mail through October 15, 2011 at PO Box 125, Moorefield, WV 26836. The jewelry was appraised in 1965 and again in 1980 at Mrs. McCoy's request. The Board had the jewelry appraised again in 2010. Those appraisals will be included with the items. For more information, please go to www.mccoysgrand.com.

Jousting originated in medieval England as competition for honor and riches between two knights. 15th Century combatants engaged in sometimes bloody contests. It survives today as a non-violent but no less challenging competition using rings instead of humans as targets. For many years, some of Hardy County's prominent citizens dressed up in full regalia and practiced this same non-violent format of jousting. The Knights of the South Branch Valley keeps the skill alive into the 21st Century. Saturday at 11 am in the field behind the Hardy County Public Library. Sponsored by the Loy-Giffin Funeral Home.
Quick and dependable muzzle loading of flintlocks provided security for the frontier family. Today the skill persists as a sport enjoyed by gun enthusiasts in competition more challenging than common shooting range contests. By using simple handmade targets of tin, coal and straw, rather than paper bull's-eye targets, the competion not only increases the level of difficulty but also incorporates the historic challenges faced by frontiersmen. The Rod and Gun Club hosts the competition at 10 am on Saturday. The club is located about two miles south of Moorefield via South Fork Road, turn left on South Fork Estates Road #2.
